SEO For Small Companies
A common question we hear is, what about SEO for small companies, is it necessary? And my response is very simple – not only is it necessary, it is critical. The internet is the one level playing field left for small companies and they should do everything possible to leverage that opportunity to complete fairly against larger companies. It can be the difference of a successful business or a struggling business.
You might ask, how can small companies compete against large company SEO budgets? Well, to be honest you cannot. Many large companies have a team of people that are dedicated to search engine optimization and they also make large investments into other search engine marketing programs like pay per click, etc. Their SEO budget is in the hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars.
But that does not mean that small companies who implement an SEO process cannot out-wit or out-smart large companies with a laser focused SEO program. That is the essence of SEO for small companies – finding niches within the broader market. It takes a lot of work but many small companies outpace larger companies for higher rankings on the search engines for similar keywords.
The bigger issue though is why SEO for small companies is so important for small companies …
I have worked for several small companies that competed against larger companies and we were always dwarfed by their massive marketing budgets. That is pretty common and small companies have always struggled on establishing market presence without similar marketing budgets. Now, traditional advertising methods do not work any more:
- Advertising in newspapers or magazines is very expensive and mostly ineffective, other than to create some brand awareness for the few readers who are still left.
- Direct mail campaigns often end up with a lot of wasted paper in the trash cans because 98%+ of the people who receive the package do not want or need this information.
- Email marketing has almost become taboo.
- Telemarketing is almost illegal with do not call lists, etc.
So that leaves very few options on where small businesses can smartly spend their marketing budget. That is why SEO is so important for small companies because search engine rankings can always be improved.
Many companies often view search engine optimization as a technical issue. We coach these companies that this is not a technical issue at all and should rather be viewed as a marketing strategy. Improving search engine rankings for the targeted keywords that define your business should be the number one marketing strategy your company has because it is the single best method of finding new clients.
When large companies implement their SEO strategy, they tend to focus on broad terms that get the most traffic. They can afford to do that with their large budgets. When doing SEO for small companies, the strategy is to go after the more specific ‘long tail keyword’ terms that have less traffic but are also less competitive. The result is that top search engine positions can be obtained more quickly with the more specific keywords, leading to organic search engine traffic more quickly. This is one of the methods of SEO that we use to help small companies improve their business with a better SEO strategy.
