Targeted Internet Marketing
Much is made about search engine optimization being the best method of getting high volume search engine traffic. But companies who see SEO as only a way to get higher search engine placement are missing the point. There is much more than just high rankings, it is also about identifying your company’s online presence that will build your online visibility.
Perhaps using the term SEO is not the right approach when discussing internet marketing, because SEO has such a technical tone to it that makes some people feel uncomfortable. Business owners are looking for solutions to their business problems, and they never invest in something that they do not understand. Our experience with SEO is that the majority of people are confused about search engine optimization and do not understand what it does or how it works – and therein lies the difficulty of getting business owners to buy an SEO project.
For that reason, when there is an “SEO” project in the budget, the implementation typically gets pushed over to the technical geeks and treated as a technical project – meaning that it never gains the strategic support it deserves for the value that it can provide.
On the other hand, viewing the same issue as “targeted internet marketing” is much easier for business owners to understand because intuitively they see the value of branding their business around keyword phrases that describe what they offer. In this light internet marketing is perceived to have strategic value and gets treated as a strategic project with senior management involvement.
There are definitely technical aspects to internet marketing but from a pure business impact, there is much more value to see this as a “marketing opportunity” instead of a “technical issue” that needs to get fixed.
So when your company is considering doing an SEO project or doing targeted internet marketing, there is a subtle difference in words which can make a big impact on the perceived value of the overall project.
