SEO Fundamentals
To have success with an SEO project, there are certain SEO fundamentals that need to be followed. These SEO fundamentals assure that the SEO process is followed correctly and that the project stays on track by executing the key elements that lead to success, over and over again. So what are the SEO fundamentals that are so critical to achieving higher page ranking?
We break these fundamentals down into three key areas as documented below:
- Targeted keywords – Several key elements are important here, and the selection of targeted keywords as the starting point is the foundation of the SEO strategy. Our article on What Are SEO Keywords describes the types of keywords to target, but the following are all very important to consider in the selection process of choosing keywords to build an online marketing strategy around:
- * – The keywords must be ‘germane’ to the business’ target market and must fit the overall marketing strategy
- * – The keywords must drive a substantial amount of traffic to make it worth the effort that is involved in optimizing web pages for those targeted keywords
- * – The keywords should have a low competition so that high search engine rankings on those keywords can be achieved to gain visibility in the search engines
- Create content – Search engines love fresh, new and unique content and the general rule is that the more keyword relevant content, the better. This content can come in many forms and can be placed in multiple places. Most new content should start with a blog or website on a daily basis if possible. Besides getting positive results from the search engines, a loyal following of readers will be developed who come back often to read new articles that have been posted.
- Build high quality back links – Building a consistent flow of high quality, keyword relevant backlinks will directly result in better search engines rankings. Google has openly stated that the quantity and quality of back links are the number one factor when determining how pages rank in the search engines. The following are some examples of the steps that can be taken to build high quality backlinks on a consistent basis:
- * – Article submissions – There are multiple article submission sites available to submit articles. This is one of the oldest and most effective method of building back links, because well-written articles get wide syndication across multiple article directories and personal blogs that decide to re-publish your article.
- * – Web directory submissions – Another effective back link strategy is making manual submissions to web directories. Typically this is a manual process and takes weeks or months for the submissions to actually post your links, but it is well worth the time it takes to do the submissions. Web directories typically have high Alexa rankings from aged domains – two key factors in determining the value of the back link. Combined with targeted keywords as anchor text and website directories are a good method of building backlinks
- * – Social bookmarking submissions – There are a number of social bookmark websites that accept content submissions. Social bookmarking sites have a two fold affect on a website: a) they can drive additional traffic to your website and b) they are a very effective back link building strategy. The search engines love links from these social bookmarking sites and this should be a key part of any back link building strategy.
- * – Forum posting – A very good, low-tech, old fashioned method of building back links is by posting in forums. There are three reasons to use forum posting for building backlinks and traffic to your website: a) the forum websites typically provide links from high value websites, b) the back links come from keyword relevant websites, and 3) forum readers will click through the links to to create website traffic.
- * – Blog comment posting – Another low-tech method of building back links is to do manual comment posting in other people’s blogs. This is very beneficial because of the ability to create keyword relevant anchor text.
Being fundamentally sound with an SEO strategy is not a very glamorous exercise, in fact it is hard and tedious work. Making sure that these key steps are followed takes consistent, diligent effort on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. But the result of consistent implementation of SEO fundamentals will lay the foundation of a strong performing website that continues to increase website ranking on Google. And because it is completed by using the right methods of SEO, it will be more difficult for other websites to take top positions for the keywords that have been targeted.
